Why gutters matter

Getting roof water away from the basement

Most Livonia homes have basements, and many sit on fairly flat lots where water doesn’t naturally run away from the foundation. That makes the gutters more than trim. When they overflow, sag or drop water right beside the house, it soaks into the soil along the foundation and too often shows up as a damp basement wall in spring.

A lot of the gutters on Livonia houses are older sectional runs with seams every few feet, and downspouts that empty a few inches from the foundation. Mature trees fill them with leaves, maple seeds and shingle granules, and heavy snow and ice pull them away from the fascia over time.

We install seamless gutters in one continuous piece from corner to corner, sized for the area of roof that drains into them. Downspouts are placed where they can carry water well away from the house, with extensions where needed. Hangers are spaced to handle snow and ice, and we check the fascia and drip edge behind the gutter so water ends up in the trough, not behind it. Guards are available to cut down on clogs. If your gutters are past saving, see our gutter replacement page.

What we install

Gutter work for Livonia homes

Everything that moves water from the roof edge to a safe spot in the yard.

Seamless gutters

One continuous run between corners, with no seams along the length to leak or pull apart.

Fewer joints, fewer drips

Downspouts & extensions

Enough downspouts for the roof area, placed so water lands well away from the foundation.

Keeps basements drier

Gutter guards

Covers that keep leaves, seeds and shingle grit out so the gutter keeps flowing between cleanings.

Cuts down on clogs

Sizing to the roof

Steep, large or valley-fed roof sections push more water; we size the gutter and outlets to match.

No overflow in downpours

Ice & snow detailing

Solid hangers, the right pitch and ice and water shield at the eaves so winter ice does less harm.

Built for freeze-thaw

Gutter repairs

Leaking corners, loose hangers and clogged or crushed downspouts fixed when the system is still worth keeping.

Repair before replace
Choosing the right setup

Gutters, guards and downspouts, side by side

Not every house needs every option. A ranch with no trees nearby may only need properly sized seamless gutters and a couple of well-placed downspouts. A two-story with oaks and maples over the roof will spend every fall clogging unless it has guards.

During the free inspection we look at the roof pitch and size, where the valleys dump water, the trees overhead and where the yard slopes, then recommend what the house actually needs. You get it in writing with photos of the problem spots, so you can compare it fairly.

If the gutters you have are the right size and still hold their pitch, we’ll say so. Sometimes a few added downspouts, longer extensions or a set of guards solve the problem without new gutters at all. And if the roof itself is near the end of its life, we’ll point that out too, because gutters are best replaced when the new drip edge goes on.

How it works

Three steps to gutters that actually drain

You see what we find before you decide anything.

Free inspection

We check the gutters, downspouts, fascia and roof edge, and watch where the water goes now.

  • Photos of problem spots
  • Roof edge checked too
  • Honest repair vs. replace

Written estimate

You get a written estimate with the gutter size, downspout locations and any guards spelled out.

  • Sized to your roof
  • Options side by side
  • No pressure

Clean install

We hang the new system, test the flow and clean up the yard before we leave.

  • Pitch set to drain
  • Old gutters hauled away
  • Daily cleanup

Fighting ice dams?

Ice along the gutters usually starts on the roof: heat loss, ventilation and missing ice and water shield.

Gutters in Livonia

Trees, flat lots and spring thaws

Three things make gutters work harder on a Livonia house than you might expect.

Livonia’s older neighborhoods have had decades to grow tall trees, and the lots are mostly level. Add a fast spring thaw or a summer downpour, and the gutters have to move a lot of water quickly, through leaves and seeds, to a spot where it can drain away from the house.

Mature trees

Leaves, seeds and twigs that clog gutters and downspouts several times a year.

Basements

Downspouts placed and extended to keep water from soaking the soil along the foundation.

Thaw and downpours

Gutters sized and hung to handle snowmelt and heavy summer rain without overflowing.

Roofing questions

Gutter questions from Livonia homeowners

Sizing, guards and keeping water out of the basement.

Can new gutters help my wet Livonia basement?
They often help. If water is overflowing the gutters or draining right next to the foundation, moving that water away can make a real difference. Basement leaks can have other causes too, so we look at where the roof water is going and tell you what we see.
Are gutter guards worth it with all the trees on my street?
On houses under mature trees, guards can cut down on how often gutters clog. No guard is maintenance-free, so we explain what to expect from the options.
Why seamless gutters instead of sections?
Seamless gutters run in one piece along each side of the house, so there are no joints along the run to open up and leak. Only the corners and outlets are sealed.
Do I need a permit for new gutters in Livonia?
Gutter work often doesn’t need one, but requirements can change. Check with the City of Livonia’s building department for your address.
Should I replace gutters with my roof?
It is often a good time. The drip edge and gutters work together, and replacing both at once lets us set them up correctly and protect the fascia.
What affects the cost of new gutters?
The length of the runs, the number of corners and downspouts, the height of the house, guards, and any fascia repair. The inspection and written estimate are free.
